From Camden Lock, you can go in two directions. One option is a two-mile route to Little Venice and the junction with the Grand Union Canal. In the opposite direction, you can reach the Limehouse Basin. From here, go down the steps and under the bridge over the Regent\u2019s Canal, and make tracks along the towpath in the direction of Kings Cross. This first part of the walk is very atmospheric, passing by narrowboats and locks, Victorian warehouses, the odd caf\u00e9 and, near the Kingsland Basin, the Word on the Water second hand floating bookshop.\u00a0 A little further on, the\u00a0<strong>Camley Street Natural Park <\/strong>is\u00a0an educational two-acre nature reserve.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2117\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2117\" style=\"width: 1264px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2117 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linguaholidays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_1006-e1574438794932.jpg\" alt=\"Take a walk along the Regent's Canal, between Camden and Kings Cross\" width=\"1264\" height=\"948\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Explore London life away from the streets<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Step off the canal to explore the new developments at King&rsquo;s Cross<\/h4>\n<p>At <strong>King\u2019s Cross<\/strong>, the canal area is currently being transformed into one of the most vibrant corners of London. Granary Square is a vast open space with fountains, caf\u00e9s and restaurants. Pass by the iconic cast iron structure of the gasholders at St Pancras Lock. These are being developed into a complex of high end apartments set amidst a canalside park. Nearby Coal Drops Yard will open in autumn 2018 as another major shopping destination for London.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2121\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2121\" style=\"width: 1081px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2121 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linguaholidays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_1984-e1574438887175.jpg\" alt=\"Explore Kings Cross - visit Granary Square and Coal Drops Yard\" width=\"1081\" height=\"772\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2121\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pause for a coffee at Caravan in Granary Square<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shortly after Granary Square, Battlebridge Basin is home to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canalmuseum.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London Canal Museum<\/a>. This is a great place to learn about London\u2019s waterways and the history of the ice and ice cream trades in the UK.\u00a0 The former ice warehouse was built for ice cream maker, Carlo Gatti.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, leave the towpath as the canal disappears into the Islington Tunnel. As you climb up from the canal, cross Muriel Street and follow the footpath opposite through the housing estate until you reach Maygood Street. Turn right at the junction with Barnsbury Road and continue a short distance until you see <strong>Chapel Market<\/strong> on your left. Continue to the end of Chapel Market, turn right onto Liverpool Road and cross Islington\u2019s Upper Street.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Shopping in Camden Passage, Islington<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If you have time to spare, Camden Passage and its neighbouring streets are one of London&rsquo;s top shopping spots.\u00a0 Traditionally renowned for its antiques, its broad range of shops and delis greatly enhance any shopping experience. This is the place for you if you like to rummage through vintage clothes and jewellery, check out the latest contemporary designs or pick up a couple of boxes of handmade chocolates as gifts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2109\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2109\" style=\"width: 1184px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2109 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linguaholidays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/DSC01660-e1574435847790.jpg\" alt=\"Browse the vintage collections in shops and on stalls in Camden Passage\" width=\"1184\" height=\"888\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Antiques and vintage jewellery in Camden Passage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Returning to the walk, to the left of Angel tube station on Upper Street, signposts indicate Duncan Street and back to the canal.\u00a0 This stretch of the towpath can be slightly busier and a little less atmospheric than the first part of the walk. What it does provide, however, is a great insight into canal life. We did the walk on a bright winter\u2019s day when the smell of wood smoke from the barges lingered in the air and people \u2013 city and canal boat dwellers \u2013 were making the most of the sunshine and exploring the towpath on bikes.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Stroll through one of London\u2019s secret markets<\/strong><\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1481\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1481\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1481 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linguaholidays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Broadway-Market-London.jpg\" alt=\"Broadway Market is one of north London's top markets with locals\" width=\"375\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.linguaholidays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Broadway-Market-London.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.linguaholidays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Broadway-Market-London-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.linguaholidays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Broadway-Market-London-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.linguaholidays.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Broadway-Market-London-120x90.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1481\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Explore the best local markets in London<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you do the walk on a Saturday, stop off at Broadway Market. Signposts lead to the market, just after Acton\u2019s Lock. Still very much off the tourist trail, the market in this little East End street has been home to market traders since the 1890\u2019s. It has only really started to gain popularity during recent years. Market stalls offer artisan bread, cakes, fresh farm produce and fabulous food alongside shops and laidback caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0Victoria Park and the Ragged School Museum<\/h4>\n<p>Back on the canal, the route continues past Victoria Park and the listed lock cottage and stables at Old Ford Lock. A little further along, by Johnson\u2019s Lock, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raggedschoolmuseum.org.uk\/\">Ragged School Museum<\/a> provides a wonderful insight into Victorian London.\u00a0 Thomas Barnardo established the original school, now three canalside buildings, in 1867. The aim was to provide a free basic education to the children of Mile End. Highlights today include a recreated Victorian classroom with lessons led by an actor in full costume.<\/p>\n<p>From here, it is just half a mile to Limehouse Basin. Much of the basin was redeveloped in the 1980\u2019s and is now a marina for narrowboats, yachts and other boats.\u00a0 Get the best view of the Thames from the Narrow Street Swing Bridge, then head for Limehouse Stations.
