Make the most of winter and catch up on culture in the capital. Escape the chill and spend enlightening afternoons exploring London’s exhibitions, art, drama and music. These are a few of our picks for January.
Diana: Her Fashion Story
First stop for January, don’t miss Diana: Her Fashion Story which displays several of the glamorous dresses worn by Diana in the 80’s and 90’s. This fabulous collection ranges from the demure outfits of her early appearances to the glamour and elegance of her later years. Don’t miss highlights such as the pale pink Emanuel blouse worn for her engagement portrait and the iconic deep blue velvet gown she wore when she danced with John Travolta at the White House. When you’ve finished admiring the dresses, pop outside for fresh air and a stroll in Kensington Palace Gardens.
Kensington Palace, to 18 February 2019. Adult ticket prices from £15.40.
Pierre Bonnard exhibition
Next stop, Tate Modern which starts 2019 with the UK’s first major exhibition of the works of Pierre Bonnard for over 20 years. Possibly one of the greatest colourists of the early 20th century, Matisse describes Bonnard as ‘the greatest of us all’.
Tate Modern, 23 January 2019 – 6 May 2019.
Finally, at the Royal Academy, you can explore the surprising connections between contemporary artist Bill Viola and Renaissance master Michelangelo. The new exhibition will display 15 Michelangelo drawings alongside video installations by Viola.
