The Film4 Summer Screen programme at Somerset House is as popular with Londoners as tourists. Watch a series of red carpet premieres, classic, cult and contemporary films for two weeks in August. A state-of-the-art outdoor screen, with full surround sound, displays the films in the magical setting of Somerset House’s stunning courtyard.

You can take your own picnic. Alternatively, pre-order a picnic hamper packed with smoked salmon, antipasti, bacon and gruyere tarts and other goodies.  A pop-up food stall and courtyard bars serve food and drink throughout the evening.

Films for 2019 include God’s Own Country, This is England and the comedy Clueless. The showing of The Piano will start with a live performance by pianist Shida Shahabi. Book your tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. See the full schedule here.

Get there early to secure your place – doors open at 1900hrs and a DJ plays fr until the film starts at 2100hrs when the sun goes down. The spectator area is uncovered so bring a layer on cooler evenings. You can also buy blankets – as well as backrests and cushions – at Somerset House. New for 2019, visitors can book Bean Bags and Directors’ Chairs to sit on.
