Head to the leafy north London suburb of Hampstead where nearly 800 acres of green open space will leave you wondering if you’re still in London. The pretty neighbourhood is easily accessible via the tube (northern line to Hampstead). It’s also possible to take the overground train – Hampstead Heath station is right next to the Heath.

From Hampstead tube station, nip away from the High Street at Flask Walk and continue down Well Walk to the Vale of Health and on to the Heath’s vast expanse of parkland. If you have the time, it’s worth taking the odd detour on the way to explore the charming lanes and alleyways.

Then enjoy a brisk walk across to Parliament Hill for some of the best views of London’s skyline. From here, you can head across the parkland to the men’s and ladies’ bathing ponds where locals enjoy icy plunges year round.  When you come across the perimeter fence into Kenwood, continue towards Kenwood House, stopping to admire the Henry Moore sculpture close to the House and the snowdrops and crocuses that carpet the grassy banks.

From here, you can either continue a loop of the Heath, or walk directly back to Hampstead tube station via Hampstead Lane (around 1.5 miles).

Need refreshment? The Brew House in Kenwood House offers light lunches and afternoon tea in its café or outside on a leafy garden terrace.
